January 2004 - The Governor of Alabama, Bob Riley, wrote to us to say: "Your ambition, free spirit, and determination to take on this grand task at the age of 69, has granted you the admiration, recognition, and respect of senior citizens and youth, alike."

Harold Wilson, bidding Gene Good Bye, as he heads for Mississippi. The Wilson's were a great help to Gene in Alabama, when Frank was having trouble with a hoof. They trailered Gene back and forth so he could continue his ride and rest Frank.

"What a way to travel! I'm so glad you chose our wonderful Tennessee Walkers to make the trip with you. You could never find a smoother ride anywhere. Good luck from these two senior citizens who are still training horses and loving every day of it. May the good Lord bless you and your pals with a safe and wonderful trip."

"Hey, I just had the wonderful experience of meeting Gene. He is on a short stay in Dothan, AL. I work for the television station WTVY News 4 and got to hear his story. Gene is doing great, along with George and Frank! It truly was an honor to meet him and hear of his wonderful adventures. He is such a special man and I wish him luck for the rest of his journey. He is planning on heading to Montgomery tomorrow to meet our Governor! Good luck Gene, it was great meeting you!!"

"Gene got to stay with us 3 days and 2 nights in Demopolis, Ala. We were glad to let him use 2 of our horses in order to help his rest. I hope he made it OK on the Wagon Train to Jackson, MS. We had planned on making the trip, but didn't get to. Where ever he is now, I would love for him to know that we wish him well!"

"Gene - Hi Molly (UK) here. My delightful friends entertained you in Alabama just a few months ago - and 'we' got to speak on the telephone.
Just catching up on where you might be. I understand that the two TWHs are back on form after a rest to take care of their sore feet. Yea for the TWH. But now you are riding one horse and leading three... awesome.
What a very small world the equestrian world is. Here I was sitting all quiet looking at one of our smaller horse magazines 'Natural Horsemanship' when I saw an article by Frauke 'Ride into the Sunset' on a proposed 200 miler along part of the Ridgeway (one of our longest old drover routes in the UK - not many left to ride on now). Well, one thing led to another, Frauke is re-planning her adventure for Spring 2005 - and hopefully, I will be joining her... Your name came up when Frauke asked me what I rode: 'Oh, a gaited horse, a TWH!' Imagine my amazement when your name came up, and of course your two Tennessee Walkers: I was SOooo glad to hear that they were both back on the road with you. Those two guys are wonderful.
My wee munchkin is doing a 100 miler this week. I lent him to a friend to participate in her pre-booked riding holiday - her Peruvian Paso is lamed out (!!) Yes. Looks like the dreaded! Anyway, Monterrey McCurdy to the rescue. He is leading out from the other three riders: bold as brass, nothing daunts him - except muddy puddles. Oh dear. *And he has been SSOoo exposed to mud and puddles. Apart from those darn mud holes (only there ya know ta try ta swalla y'all up, whole) he is proving ace on the road.
I have him barefoot. This afternoon seems like he could be a tad looking for soft grasses to walk out on; but is very happy. Being ridden through horrendous storms over here, interspersed with hot and humid. Much like I imagine what you may have been/are facing.
Great to speak. You take care now. Why, Elaine and Harold Jes won't believe me, not at all. "

"Gene stayed with us in Demopolis, Alabama for a couple of nights. As a reminder of who we are - he enjoyed riding my black & white - Moon-Pie. He didn't enjoyed the red & white quarter "Frog". We have been keeping up with him and worried about the winter cold. ..knew he is a tough fellow tho. Almost home!! Good luck!"
