July 2003 - The Governor of Vermont, James Douglas, wrote to say, "I am very sorry to have missed visiting with you when you rode through Vermont." The letter ends, "I wish you a safe and enjoyable journey as you continue your trek to the remainder of the U.S. capitals. You are an inspiration to all of us. God bless and happy trails to you."

"Dear LRG,
Welcome to both the Green Mountain State of Vermont, Gene, as well as our beautiful and small Capitol City of Montpelier. I hope you plan to tour the State House if you have time and energy for it. It is my hope to see you in town today Friday, June 27, and possibly get to meet and speak with you at least briefly if I make it when and to where you will be. If I do not get to however, Godspeed and happy trails."

"I was one of the women who came out on the statehouse lawn and talked to you. I actually work in the Governor's office and went back to try and arrange for the Governor, who was in meetings to come out and meet with you. When the Governor finally was able to get free you were already heading up Elm St. He is very sorry that he missed you, and wishes you the very best as you continue on your way."

"Gene rode into Water Tower Farms in Marshfield, VT early Saturday afternoon, June 28. I continued conducting the Connected Riding clinic I was giving for the New England Walking Horse Association, under the watchful eye of Gene as George and Frank enjoyed themselves grazing on the hillside pasture. That evening I was lucky enough to join Gene and a few others for dinner and listen to his stories and knowledge of horses. Dianne Lashoones, owner of the farm, and I went with Gene to the stop that Dianne had found for Gene for Monday, June 30. We carried some of his equipment there so that the horses' backs could have a break to help heal up the sores that ARE healing beautifully. Then dinner and some more wonderful stories and awareness about people and horses. I learned so much this past weekend from Gene. It is a time I will cherish as long as I live. Please let me know when he will be heading into New Jersey as I am sure I can arrange for him to have a place along most of his trek through the state."

"We had the pleasure of hosting Gene, Frank and George for 2 nights June 28th and 29th. We raise Tennessee Walkers here in Marshfield, Vermont and it was a thrill to listen to his stories. His horses are great ambassadors of our breed. I had asked Gene if he would still be in New England by early November. He did say he planned to be further south by then, and being a resident of New England I certainly understand why! However, if circumstances happened to result in the possibility that he could re-visit in West Springfield, Mass on Nov 6-9th, we of the New England Walking Horse Assoc will be promoting the Tennessee Walking Horse at Equine Affaire. This venue brings equine education to all disciplines of horse owners, with an anticipated total attendance of over 90,000. What a wonderful venue for Gene to promote his ride and the charity he raises money for! We would love to have Gene join us in our demonstration and have the opportunity to talk to thousands of people if he so desired. Please pass this on to him, and give him our best."

"I saw Gene and his trusty steeds as I was leaving work in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, yesterday afternoon. Had I known what this man, his horses and quest was all about I would have stopped to shake his hand and give Frank and George a pat. I'm sorry to say that I only read about this amazing story in today's paper. You see, in Vermont it is not uncommon to see a person on horseback meandering down the road!
I wish him and his mounts a safe and memorable journey. This undertaking is truly an inspiration to all mankind. I hope he is welcomed with open arms in every town he graces. Good luck and Good bless."

"We live on Miles Pond in North Concord Vermont. Gene stayed with our next door neighbor on July 2nd, we watched him leave on the next leg of his journey from our porch. We did not talk to him as he left, but it was an honor just to have seen him."

Dear Gene,
Even though I had kept up with most of the news articles published during your long ride, it was good to recently visit your Website and read the various updates in order to catch myself up about how you have been doing since as well as learning you have been recovering and also beginning to take better care of yourself.

Be well.
